The Samsung Z Flip5’s remarkable Overall display score puts it in third place among all smartphones in our database to date, and is the highest-scoring Samsung device tested so far. Unsurprisingly, it is also the highest-scoring flip phone for display currently in our database.
For several attributes, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 performs similarly to its predecessor, the Z Flip4, but has better readability, particularly outdoors. The smartphone has suitable brightness and is readable in every lighting condition, including in full sunlight, where its peak brightness comes close that of the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and actually provides better legibility than the S23 Ultra when viewed on angle. The Z Flip5 is also very good for watching HDR10 videos in low-light and indoor conditions.
Videos play smoothly with few frame mismatches; the default color setting (“vivid”) provides a wide gamut and pleasantly saturated colors. With smoother and more precise touch than the S23 Ultra, the Z Flip5 is accurate and reactive in every condition, but unintentional touches are frequent when using the device with one hand; moreover, our testers easily felt the crease when scrolling. Under sunlight, colorful content appears flat and unnatural, and the crease is visible in every condition, especially outdoors.
Although our display test scores are based on the main screen, we also ran some tests on the Z Flip5’s new cover screen (the smaller screen on the back of the phone). The cover screen’s color gamut is similar to that of the main screen, although its peak brightness in full sunlight is slightly lower (1560 nits vs. 1710 nits). Further, with a reflectance of 8.9%, the cover screen is more reflective than the main screen (5.2%). Of note is that the cover can only display predefined widgets such as notifications and a calendar, thus limiting its usefulness for now.

How Display Readability score is composed
Readability evaluates how easily and comfortably users can read still content (photos & web) on the display under different real-life conditions. DXOMARK uses its Display Bench to recreate ambient light conditions ranging from total darkness to bright sunlight. In addition to laboratory tests, perceptual analysis is also made in real-life environments.

How Display Color score is composed
The color attribute evaluates the capacity of the device to accurately reproduce colors. The measurements taken are for fidelity, white point color, and gamut coverage. We perform color evaluations for different lighting conditions to see how well the device can manage color in the surrounding environment. Colors are measured using a spectrophotometer in a controlled lighting environment. Perceptual analysis of color rendering is against the reference pattern displayed on a calibrated professional monitor.

How Display Video score is composed
Our video attribute evaluates the Standard Dynamic Range (SDR) and High Dynamic Range (HDR10) video handling of each device in indoor and low-light conditions. We measure tone mapping, color gamut, brightness and contrast of the display. We perform perceptual analysis against our professional reference monitor (Sony BVM-HX310) to ensure that the rendering respects the artistic intent.

How Display Touch score is composed
To evaluate touch, DXOMARK uses a touch robot and a high-speed camera to play and record a set of scenarios for smoothness, accuracy and response-time evaluation.
